Armchair BEA, Day 5: Ask the Experts

Design credit: Nina of Nina Reads.
Today (the final day for Armchair BEA) is Ask the Expert day.  Before I get to that, just wanted to say thanks to everyone who visited my blog this week - I loved getting to know you a bit more and discovering your blogs.  And now, instead of pretending I'm an expert in anything blogging related, I thought I'd throw this question out:

How do you keep the content of your blog feeling fresh - not the same thing day in and day out?

I sure feel like my reviews and other posts are getting stale.  I like to have a schedule (Mondays I post X, etc) but not keep to it very strictly.  I guess I just feel like with so many other blogs out there doing everything under the sun, there's really nothing new or exciting for me to blog about.  (Oh that sounds so whiny, but I'm leaving it, because it's true.)

Anywho, that's my question for you experts!  Answer away, if you like :)

If you buy through my Amazon linkage, I will get a very small percentage

  1. I've read in several areas that the more blogs in your desired topic of blogging, the more chances of being read - I think it was problogger that said that...make yourself happy with what you are blogging about and that will in turn come out in your posts :-D

    Happy Armchair BEA Week!

    1. That's interesting - I would have thought it was the other way! Thanks for stopping by and for your thoughts.

  2. I feel like I get into these blogging ruts every so often, too! Something I've tried challenging myself with lately is to read newer books, but then everyone else is talking about them too, so it seems to be a little monotonous! To help me stay "fresh" (like I'm leftovers or something, ha!) I try new things every so often. I still post reviews, keep with different memes I participate in, but if I get a random idea for the blog, I go for it. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't... but ANYTHING to add to my blog, make it more me, and help it to stand out a little is better than nothing!

    1. It does seem like everyone talks about the same books all at once, doesn't it? Great advice, thanks!

  3. Those ruts are a real pain, aren't they? It can be hard to come up with a new angle or find a way to be fresh but I think it comes down to what YOU bring to the table. The more you visible, the more you express yourself and find ways to weave what is interesting and personal to you into your blog the better.

Another way to at least keep current is to find ways to weave in current events, trends and topics. You don't have to do it every day but if something happens tweak it to fit the basic nature of what you do here.

I, too, like memes and have recently added the Top Ten Tuesday one. Sometimes I just open up a file, set a timer for 30 minutes and just list ideas. I don't edit or reject. They can be silly, serious, whatever, the idea is to list. If you were to list 100 ways to do something different on your blog, you'd be amazed at what's percolating deep within you. :)

This has been a fun week and turned out to be a great way for me to do generate some new content and I love visiting everyone's blogs and reading their work.

    1. Those are some awesome ideas! I think I will sit down and write down ideas just to see what's in my head. Thanks!

  4. It's hard to stand out, but just keep at it, and visit other blogs, that will get some return traffic. The discussion is the best part

  5. Ack, I don't know. I guess just being true to yourself. Then you know that your personality will shine through.

  6. I'm a really new blogger, but I just try to keep my reviews and posts light. As a naturally sarcastic person, I prefer to just write what I feel needs to be written, and not write long and overly serious reviews. It makes me feel a lot better about what I am posting.

    1. I do sometimes try to keep things light, though I tend to be a bit long-winded at times too - thanks for the advice!

  7. I struggle with this all the time. I think we all do. I think if you just throw some personal random stuff in there sometimes that's pretty fresh.

  8. Hi! Love your blog and your reviews. Your book choices are great...one dystopian lover to another! LOL
It seems to me that variety is the answer to keeping a blog fresh and interesting. Even book blogs need to have a boost of variety. I'm one who can get into a simple book reviewing rut. But once in a while I give myself a kick in the boookie and shift into another gear. The blogs I seem to like best do that...keep it real and keep it moving. I like a mix of eclectic books. I think readers like new books and old books, and some that are published by publishing houses and some of the newly famous self-published. No book can be discounted these days.
One of my best friends who blogs has a fabulous sense of humor, so that keeps me going back to her blog frequently. Personalities that come through are awesome!

  9. huh--I don't think your reviews feel unfresh! But one think I've found is fun is to let yourself write in a totally different format than your usual one...like most of my reviews follow the same old form of summery then reaction, but sometimes it's fun to shake that up and try a whole new approach.

  10. I think trying new things always helps, at least for me. I'm trying to find a new way to approach book reviews myself :)

  11. To be honest I kind of feel the same way. I don't really feel like there is much that can be done that's truly unique. I tend to stick a lot with reviews because they're the easiest... but I think where the unique factor comes in is just the written content itself. Everyone has their own voice, and the way people write posts, for me, is what's going to keep me coming back. I want to read things I identify with, because I like that voice, not because a person has a flashy 'new' idea.
