Listless Monday, Food Fiction Edition

Listless Monday was inspired by both Amanda at A Bookshelf Monstrosity's feature Books by Theme and Court at Once Upon a Bookshelf's Listed feature.  Be sure to check out their lists!

Ah, food. Who doesn't love food?  Summer is a great time for food, at least for me, because I love fresh fruit and veggies.  I adore a good grilled steak or hamburger.  Ice cream and popsicles are their own food group, in my book.  So, since I've had food on the brain for a month now, I figured I'd compile a list of books that relate to food or beverages in some way.  I know there are lots more than I have here, so feel free to tell me some I forgot!

Food Fiction:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (suggested by Kelly J.)
Chocolat by Joanne Harris (suggested by Court and Andie)
The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier
Comfort Food by Kate Jacobs (suggested by Britt)
Coop by Michael Perry (suggested by Andi

Eggsecutive Orders by Julie Hyzy (suggested by Britt)

  5. The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie.

Okay, okay, so it doesn't exactly involve a lot of cooking, but a pie and a saying about a pie is involved in it, and the title comes from this quote:

Unless some crinkling at the bottom lie,
Who cares for all the sweetening of the pie?

It comes from a "cookery" book.

  6. I second "Chocolat" and also several other books by Joanne Harris with food in the title (eg Five Quarters of the Orange & The Lollipop Shoes.)

Also, "Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel and the book "Sunshine" by Robin McKinley is very much about baking as well as vampires.

  7. Everyone has fabulous suggestions, thank you!

Andi, I think I'd like to read Coop, but I'm not sure how soon I could get a copy...

Court, I know - read it after lunch or something?

Bookshelf Monstrosity, ah, you make me blush :)

Kelly, I know I kept thinking of a bunch, even after I posted it! Thanks!

Lauren, I can't believe I forgot that one! I loved it and I agree - it might not have been a major part, but it was enough of a part to count.

Andie, I'm guessing Sunshine isn't about baking vampires. :) I've been meaning to read this one, since I really love McKinley's stuff.

  8. Julie Hyzy's mysteries starring the White House executive chef-- State of the Onion, Hail to the Chef, Eggsecutive Orders.

Sarah Addison Allen's Sugar Queen and The Girl Who Chased the Moon.

    Kate Jacobs' Comfort Food

Diane Mott Davidson's food mysteries, there's a whole slew of those. Dying for Chocolate is one... maybe the first one. Can't remember.

There are a lot of food books out there!

  10. Melissa--the 'vampire slayer' in Sunshine is a baker and there's the most awesome descriptions of yummy food--or that's what I recall, anyways!

  11. Andie, that actually makes the book sound even more intriguing! I need to pick it up soon.
