We did Pete the Cat and his (2) groovy buttons last year. Our buttons looked a lot like your pears. Simple and fun. This year the boy was the boy from Journey. We made him the chalk belt that the girl gets in Quest to kind of round out the costume. No one had a clue who he was, but we loved it!
Oh my gosh, that is the CUTEST idea!! Hmm, I wonder if I could convince the older kids to be various food so the little one can be the caterpillar.... I'm pinning this for the idea, by the way. :D

So fun! Literary costumes are so fun, even if people don't have a clue who you are (there were some who didn't know about the Hungry Caterpillar :)
