I just had to note: I totally failed on this year's winners! Usually I manage to read at least one book from the Newbery or Printz winners list before the announcement. This year? Not. One. Seriously, how did this happen? In fact, pretty much the whole list of winners was a fail for me. I read (and loved) one honor book for the William C. Morris award (debut authors), The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson. I'm hoping to fix this and I put several of the winners on hold at the library. Still, I'm feeling pretty lousy in my reading. And I admit I'm a bit sad that Okay For Now by Gary Schmidt didn't even garner an honor. But! There are lots of delightful books (well, I hope so, since I haven't read many) on the winners list.

How did you do on your award-winning reading?

I did surprisingly well at reading the winners this year, but not great at calling them. I was surprised that Where Things Come Back's win. I loved the book, but I thought it would be too quirky to take home the award. I was also surprised to have read any of the Newbery books--that's my weak area; I usually read picture books or YA, not much in between. Breaking Stalin's Nose is excellent!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! Honestly, I hadn't heard of Where Things Come Back or Breaking Stalin's Nose. At least I've heard of Dead End in Norvelt!
DeleteI managed to read one of the Printz honors, and I have the other on my TBR pile. I haven't read the winner, though. I've read 2 of the three Newberys, but I don't particularly like the winner. Huh.
ReplyDeleteI usually manage at least one honor book, but my reading was way off this year. I guess I'll have to see what I think after the fact.
DeleteI think the only read one of the Printz honor books (Why We Broke Up, which I thought was quirky and kind of cute). I hadn't heard of many of the rest. And I always like looking at the picture book awards so I can hunt them down at my library.
ReplyDeleteAt least Why We Broke Up was one I'd heard of before. I haven't heard of the Printz winner!
DeleteI haven't read any either, but that's not surprising at all!
ReplyDeleteWith the variety you read, I would think you had managed one too! At least I'm not alone :)
DeleteTotally agree with you about Okay for Now. Sorry that it missed out. I loved it!
ReplyDeleteMe too! How sad it was overlooked. :(
