Stuff I Wish I Did More Often

A Bit of Me(Me) is hosted by Danielle of There's a Book.

Well, since the topic for this week made it very clear these things we do in our spare time don't have to be talents, I thought I'd post some things that I really wish I did more often, but which I do occasionally get around to.

The first one is something I started really working hard at during high school.  In my AP art classes, I began really changing the way I drew and painted, putting in hours of work on technique and style, which is when I figured out my best medium is watercolor.  I'm also pretty sure that was the last time I peaked in my talent.  Most of what I have done since then (which, I assure you, is not very much) was for family, who tend to tell me it's great even if it's not.  But, here are a few pieces I'm fairly proud of:

(The irony of these photos is not lost on me - they are wretchedly bad shots of something supposed to be artsy.)  I was reluctant to post them, since it seems like a big fat "validate me" type of thing, so feel free not to say nice things about my art (but don't say not nice things about it, please).  :)

The second thing I wish I did more is write.  I've always loved to write little bits of story or even essays in high school (I was such a nerd).  And, once again, it's fallen pretty much to the bottom of my list of things I do.  I have made some resolutions in recent years (including this one) to actually sit down and write out some of my ideas for stories.  I haven't gotten too far, but I'm making baby steps.  Sometime I might actually finish something and feel satisfied.

So, what do you do (or wish you did) in your spare time?

If you buy through my Amazon linkage, I will get a very small percentage

  1. I actually thought that these were all really good! I've always wished I were more artistic but it just doesn't seem to be my thing :) I do wish I had more time to cross stitch and scrapbook which are two hobbies I enjoy but RARELY (and I mean very rarely) do.

  2. Well, I liked them too. I cannot draw, sketch, or paint, but several people in my family can!

I do write, though, and I create a lot of blogs!

    Here's what I wrote today:

  3. Wow, I think they are awesome! And I'm not just saying that! :) Really.

I've always thought it would be fun to write too, I mean really write. But I decided to totally give up that idea awhile back. I don't have near enough courage or faith in myself, or something. I hope you do keep taking the baby steps! Very cool.

  4. Not just to be validating - but those are really good. I WISH I could be artsy and make things that look nice that people would want to display.

  5. I love your paintings and am so jealous that you can work with watercolors! I have never been able to get the hang of them and trust me, it is not for lack of trying.

    Beautiful:)

  6. Thank you all for your kind comments!

samantha, I very rarely get a chance to paint. Or write. But, I still listed them as hobbies, so I'm sure your cross-stitching and scrapbooking count!

Laurel-Rain, I'm not sure I have enough ability to maintain my two blogs (one personal, which I update about once a month...)!

Suey, I'm with you on the faith in myself. I haven't sat and written something non-bloggish in a long time. I hope you decide to come back to it sometime!

Jessi, thank you! It's only my family that likes to display it, so I don't know how universal that appeal is...

Gwen, really that's the only medium that I can get things to turn out ok. I used to love pencil, because you could do much more detail, but never ever oil or other kinds of paint.

  7. How gorgeous! I'm completely jealous! I am NOT an artist in this respect, although I can definitely appreciate those who are talented in this area. I also didn't know before seeing this, but I'm guessing you must be Mormon (so am I! :o)) and I love love love the one of the Temple, as well as the one right below it. Just beautiful!

I know exactly what you mean about finishing something and feeling satisfied. It's so hard, especially with my writing and music to feel like "I'm done". I always manage to find something to nit pick every little thing. Oh, the life of a perfectionist! :o)

  8. 1stdaughter, thank you :) And yes, I am Mormon (I think I knew you were, but can't remember how I knew). For certain, trying to make things perfect is the hardest part about accomplishing something.
