Book Review: Sabotaged by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Sabotaged by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Publisher: Recorded Books
Publication date: August 2010
Length: 9 hrs
Source: Audiobook from Library
Series: The Missing, Book 3

Summary from goodreads: *spoilers are inevitable for the first two books*
After helping Chip and Alex survive 15th century London, Jonah and Katherine are summoned to help another missing child, Andrea, face her fate. Andrea is really Virginia Dare, from the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Jonah and Katherine are confident in their ability to help Andrea fix history, but when their journey goes dangerously awry, they realize that they may be in over their head. They've landed in the wrong time period. Andrea doesn't seem that interested in leaving the past. And even worse, it appears that someone has deliberately sabotaged their mission...

Things I Liked:
I'm always up for fun time travel adventures that help me learn more about history.  This series is pretty entertaining with a unique premise that keeps you invested in the characters.  I definitely knew next to nothing about the Roanoke colony, so this was really interesting to learn more about.  In fact, I think reading anything about such a strange historical mystery would be interesting.  The ending will definitely leave you dying to know what happens next.  The narrator, Chris Sorensen, was good, but not outstanding.

Things I Didn't Like:
I think that this is one book that reminded me why I am not the target audience for MG reads.  The plot twists were ridiculously obvious and I really, really wanted to smack Jonah for being so slow!  He always took ridiculously long catching on to social cues and what was happening.  Admittedly, this happens often enough that the other characters make mention of it, so it is probably intentional.  But it really annoyed me continually and I couldn't enjoy it much when I was so constantly bothered.  I'll probably keep reading the series, though, just to see what happens next (and what annoying person from history Jonah is).

Read-alikes:
Not much I can think of (sorry, feeling brain dead :)

Book Review: Sent by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Sentpicks up the story where Found left off, with Jonah and Katherine traveling with Chip and Alex back to where they came from. Chip and Alex, who are actually Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury, find themselves at the mercy of their uncle Richard III, who stole the throne from Edward. After he tries to have them killed, Chip and Alex, with the help of Jonah and Katherine, must find a way to change history - and to keep from being killed.

Sent (Missing)

Things I Liked:
I think Haddix has created a series that will make learning history much easier and more fun. Kids will love the adventure and the suspenseful action parts, and also learn a bit about history. I thought the science fiction and time travel elements were very good as well. It kept me on my toes and now I am invested in the characters and will want to continue the series.

Things I Didn't Like:
Some of the things the kids say sound weird and a bit awkward. The dialog seemed a little off, but otherwise very enjoyable.

Read-alikes:
Read Found, the first in the series
Reminded me of Haddix's Shadow Childrenseries
Also a bit like Catherine, Called Birdyand The Midwife's Apprenticeby Karen Cushman

BOOK CONTENT RATINGS:

Book Review: Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Foundis a story about Jonah, who grew up knowing he was adopted and not thinking much of it. When he and his friend Chip start receiving strange letters about how they are "missing," they think it is just a prank. Until Chip learns he's adopted too. They are soon caught up in a strange and dangerous search to figure out just what happened to them before they were adopted.

Found (The Missing, Book 1)

Things I Liked:
Haddix sure knows how to create suspenseful and interesting stories! It was an intriguing premise and I had to keep reading to figure out what happened. This is a fun new page-turning series for middle grade readers and probably younger teens. It's a good start to an exciting adventure that will keep you guessing what will happen next.

Things I Didn't Like:
The characters are a little simplified and sometimes the dialog was a bit odd, particularly some of the things Jonah said, but these things didn't detract from the entertainment value of the book. Since it is first in a series, there was a lot unexplained, but will probably be developed in later books.

Read-alikes:
A bit like When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
Reminded me of Haddix's Shadow Childrenseries, beginning with Among the Hidden

v-factor: ->
a bit of action
